Glossary
A line
A skirt or dress, with a fitted waist and side seams that are angled out, to create an “A” shape at the hem.
Bag pocket
A rectangular or teardrop shaped piece of fabric sewn to the inside of a garment creating a pocket.
Boat neckline
A straight cut across the collar bone ending at the shoulders.
Bodice
The top portion of a garment from the shoulder to the waist.
Collar
A strip of fabric cut to fit into a neckline.
Cuffs
The rectangular cut of fabric used as an extension of a sleeve to contain the fullness of the sleeve.
Dart
Fitting lines stitched to a point to create shape and contours for fitting the body.
Dickey
A triangle cut shape made to be removable and used to fill-in a deep “V” neckline.
Flounce
A circular cut of fabric stretched out to create a wave effect.
French cuffs
A double length cuff folded in half where buttonholes are used to carry cufflinks as closures.
Gathering
A row of stitching within a confined space used to reduce the fullness within that space.
Handkerchief hem
Hemline that resembles a handkerchief being held up from it’s center.
Hem
The bottom edge of a section of a garment(such as a skirt, pants,dress, sleeve etc.) is turned to the inside and stitched to the garment. Hems can be visible(topstitched) or invisible(blind stitched).
Lapel
The extension of the center front of a jacket or coat that falls back against the garment.
Mermaid skirt
A skirt or dress fitted at the waist and hip with a horizontal seam above the knee and a half or full circle flare below the knee.
Pant cuff
The extra length at the hem of the pants that is folded up to create a cuff.
Patch pocket
A shape(square, rectangle) cut piece of fabric sewn onto an area of a garment for decoration or utility.
Patch pocket with a flap
A flap sewn over the pocket.
Pencil skirt
A skirt fitted at the waist and hip line with the side seams tightly following the contour of the thigh to the knee or below.
Pintucks
Fabric folded and stitched to create a decorative effect.
Piping
A rope covered with fabric, inserted into the seam of a garment.
Placket
A fabric covered slit designed to carry buttons and other fasteners.
Pleats
A measured space brought together by vertical or horizontal stitching.
Princess line
A fitting seam that extends from either the armhole or the shoulder to the hip/hem.
Ruffle
A stripe of fabric of various widths and lengths, shirred to create a rippled effect.
Shirring
The gathering of two or more rows of stitching on fabric within a defined space.
Smocking
Three or more rolls of elastic thread sewn to create a shirred effect.
Soutache
A trim braided with a herringbone weave, used as decoration on a garment or home interior items.
Sports collar
A short tipped collar sewn into the neckline of a garment.
Straight skirt
A skirt fitted at the waist and hip line with the side seams sewn on a straight line starting from the hips.
Tapered skirt
A skirt fitted at the waist and hip line with the side seams loosely following the contour of the thigh to the knee or below.
Trumpet skirt
A six gore skirt fitted at the waist and hip with the seams flared below the hip.
Tulip hemline
A “J” shaped curve at the hemline usually overlapped at the center front.
Vent
An overlaid opening at the hem of a garment.
Welt pocket
A pocket created by sewing narrow folds of fabric(welts), into a cut-out space then sewing a larger piece of fabric to the folds to create a pocket.
Welt pocket with a flap
Same as a welt pocket with a flap covering the welts.
